Health, Safety & Environment Management

Introduction

Inkwali Project Management Services considers health and safety of people and the environment the most important aspect of its business management. Some of the work Inkwali does includes construction management and as such, personnel and equipment safety is of utmost importance. All projects under Inkwali management are managed in line with our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy and Commitment. This includes our goal of zero harm to people and the requirement to maintain an effective management system.

Our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management System provides a framework that is applied to all the projects under Inkwali management including the activities of all Contractors and other Consultants in individual project sites. Inkwali compliance to HSE is in line with the requirements of Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and construction regulation promulgated in July 2003 section 4(1)(a).

Inkwali Occupational Health & Safety Management and principles are also in line with the requirements of international standard ISO OHSAS 18001. This specification covers the health and safety requirements to be fulfilled by the contractor to ensure a continued safe and healthy environment for all employees, subcontractors, client personnel and any other persons who might be affected by construction activities.

A detailed HSE plan submitted by Principal contractor on a construction site is assessed based on the requirements of this OHS specification to make sure all safety requirements are adhered to.

Our construction safety management system therefore follows the Best practices for benchmarking purpose where safety will not be compromised.

Inkwali safety management system follows the management cycle as shown in the following figure:

In all projects under our management, Inkwali through its awareness campaign, encourages voluntary HIV/AIDS testing and counselling. Programmes aimed at reducing substance abuse in project sites are also implemented. Strong leadership and continuous motivation and education of our employees to take responsibility for themselves, their colleagues, our sub-contractors and the environment are key elements of our HSE strategy.

At Inkwali, sustainability means finding the right balance between efficient, cost effective projects delivery, social equity and safety of personnel and the environment. Inkwali management and personnel strives;

  • To continually improve green building technologies by ensuring that infrastructure under our management consume as less energy as possible,
  • To address the needs and expectations of our stakeholders in a manner which is friendly to the environment; and
  • To ensure that our company is financially viable in multiple time frames, by continually evaluating the appropriateness of our business model.
